Why so serious?

Okay okay, I know. How cliche of me to put that line as the title. Seriously though, The Dark Knight = The Best Movie Ever. Watching it in Imax = Ever Better.

For those of you who haven't seen it, I'm not going to ruin it for you (don't think I'd be able to even if I tried). The movie was intense from beginning to finish. It helped me a lot with continuity having watched Batman Begins on Tuesday night. The acting was amazing by all not just Heath Ledger. Christian Bale did a much better job at being Bruce Wayne than in BB and Aaron Eckhart was just amazing at playing Harvey Dent. Also, I'm really glad they switched Katie Holmes and put in Maggie Gyllenhaal instead, who did a much better job than Holmes ever would have.

Anyone who hasn't seen it should get tickets as soon as possible and go see it before someone ruins it for them. If you live in the Toronto area, I'll go with you to watch it a second time =)

No other rants for today. Batman makes me lose all coherent thoughts. Imagine!

What's an enplanement anyhow?

Happy Monday everyone! I actually have my eyes open at work today and that's all because Shai and I moved back downtown yesterday. Mom kept trying to get us out of Markham last week by dropping subtle hints ("I'll drop you guys there after mosque if you want") but we desisted until finally she could take no more. Apparently she's tired of waking up early to drop us, but I suspect she's just tired of our craziness =(.

Anyhoos, first off something in regards to my last post. It seems that building management noticed that people were irritated by the never ending alarm testing on Friday, so to make up for it they are...giving away free ice cream! Aww aren't they sweet? On Valentine's day they handed out roses to everyone walking through the building, and on Easter they had the Easter Bunny come in and hand out candy to everyone who worked in the building. What sweethearts (yes it's true, I am so easily bought).

On to my second item, airport taxes. Shaista and I have been looking at ticket prices to the U.S. (just for fun). It's pretty irritating when airport taxes and fees cost more than the actual price of the flight! I decided to take a good look at the different types of taxes/surcharges being laid out and one of them actually reads September 11 Security Fee.

Yeah.

I went on the website of the Transportation Security Administration (part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security) and found this in way of an explanation:

The September 11 Security Fee is imposed on passengers of domestic and foreign air carriers for air transportation that originates at airports in the United States. The fee, which is collected at the time the ticket is bought, is $2.50 per enplanement and is imposed on not more than two enplanements per one-way trip. Changes to the travel itinerary may result in either additional fees or a refund. Passengers who believe they are entitled to a refund should contact the airline which sold the ticket. The fees are collected by the direct air carriers, who must remit the fees to the Transportation Security Administration on a monthly basis.

I don't even understand what one enplanement is, let alone "two enplanements per one-way trip". The passage basically says to me they want more money to beef up security *cough question people cough*. However, shouldn't this already be taken care of? Are they saying that before this fee was charged, no security measures were in place? Or is the money generated from this charge used "for questioning" in those special circumstances where people are singled out *cough racial profiling cough*?

Or maybe I'm just a simpleton who doesn't know enough about the U.S. political, economical and social structure to be making broad claims. Does anyone out there have any thoughts on this? I bet someone is itching to play devil's advocate.

Bells ringing in my head

My alarm was set for 5:45am this morning and after snoozing for 25 minutes (I finally gave in at 6:10am) I finally got out of bed and lumbered through my morning routine to get ready for work. I fell into the car, slept through my subway ride and said goodbye sleepily to Shaista when I got off at Dundas Station.

As I walked into the Atrium, I noticed this very annoying beeping sound that was emanating throughout the building. Building security was apparently conducting some early morning tests to ensure that the alarm system was working fine and dandy.
That was at 8:09am.

It is now 9:18 and the damned alarm is still continuing to be tested, while building security asks us every so often to forgive them for their insolence. How can you do this to people on a Friday morning?! I know it's better than a Monday morning, but HOW am I supposed to concentrate on my work *cough Sudoku puzzle* when there is this very annoying and very loud ringing in my ears!

Enough with the alarm rant; don't think it's cause they stopped the testing. It's only because I think I'm coming off as a raving lunatic that spends all her time complaining. So on to other things, I've finally decided that...I'm going to camp! *Insert applause here* I've been talking about getting out of the city for so long and it just hit me that this is the perfect way of doing it! From August 1 till August 4, I'll be enjoying some (halal) fun up at Kinark Outdoor Centre. Anyone interested in coming can find forms and information at http://www.cig.ca. Yayy for camp!

That is all for now, I should probably return to my work *cough novel cough* as my co-workers start to trickle in.

P.s. At 9:26am building security announced that they would continue the alarm testing for atleast another hour! AHHHH my sanity!!

And she blogs again.

So it's been more than two years since I've decided to post on my public blog (yes I am that sad, I have more than one of these sites!). I think the only reason I'm posting again is, well, I have nothing to do at work. The past month or so I have gotten very good at completing all my work as soon as possible and looking incredibly busy at the same time, thus being able to focus on the wedding (Asma and Masood's). Now that the wedding is over, I have nothing left to do at work!

Not that I'm complaining of course, but the lack of stuff to do led me to read some of my older and much funnier posts (re: eyeliner at mosque, valentines day rants, etc). They were always inspired by everyday events in my life. I guess that begs the question, what's new and exciting today? Well I got into work this morning and decided to, for the first time ever, fall asleep at my cubicle.

Or I should say, I tried damn hard to! It's not an easy skill; trying to find the optimal position for your shoulders, so that it still appears that your (closed) eyes are focusing on your monitor. Once I found this position however, I was faced with a new and more daunting dilemma - what if I started snoring? That would be a much bigger give-away to the hordes of people who decided to trollop by my cube every day. In my attempts to solve the major problems of my life, my co-workers started to trickle in, text messages were received, and my dream to sleep at work was crushed.

This isn't fair you know! Saima's very cranky without her sleep! BAHHHH.

Enough of a rant for today I think.
